Step 5: Set up categories and assignments

  1. Click on the Categories and Assignments link displayed on the right-hand side of the page below the title of your class.

  2. The Categories and Assignments page will appear. Click the Create Category button. To begin, you will need to create at least one category. Categories are used to group together assignments, so you could create categories for Homework, Tests, Classwork, etc.

  3. The Create Category page will appear. Depending on the grading method you chose when creating your class section previously, you may or may not see certain fields.

If you chose Percent Weight as your grading method, you will see the following fields:

    • Category Title: This is the title of the category (e.g. Homework)
    • Percent Weight: This field determines how much the category will contribute to the final grade. For example, entering 25 will give the category a weight of 25% of the final grade.
    • Single Assignment Category: Check this box off if you want to create a category that only has one assignment. This is useful if you want to set up a final exam, for example.

If you check off the Single Assignment category box, you will notice that 3 new fields appear:

      • Maximum Score: The maximum possible score for the single assignment category
      • Due Date: The due date for this category. You can enter a date manually or click the calendar icon to select a date using the calendar tool.
      • No Letter Grades: Check this box off if you do not want to display letter grades for this category.

    • Extra Credit Category: Check this box off if you want the category to be an extra credit category. Any assignments added to the category will be calculated as extra credit.

    • Weigh Assignments: This determines how the individual assignments in this category will be weighted. There are 3 options you can choose from:

      • Equally: Each assignment will be weighted equally
      • By Points: Each assignment will be weighted based on the maximum score for each assignment
      • User Specified: You may specify a weight for each assignment in the category

    • Low Scores To Drop: Each student will have their lowest score(s) in the category dropped, depending on the number you enter. If you enter 1, each student will have their lowest score dropped. Entering 2 will drop the two lowest scores in the category, and so on.

If you chose Total Points as your grading method, you will see the following fields:

    • Category Title: This is the title of the category (e.g. Homework)

    • Low Scores To Drop: Each student will have their lowest score(s) in the category dropped, depending on the number you enter. If you enter 1, each student will have their lowest score dropped. Entering 2 will drop the two lowest scores in the category, and so on.

  4. When you are finished setting up your category, click the Create Category button. You will be returned to the main Categories and Assignments page - you should now see the new category listed.
