Importing Test Item Files Into MicroTest Pro

MicroTest Pro was designed to import test questions from the two basic sources of test items:

  • Test Items residing in a word processing program that were authored” by instructors or trainers.

  • Test items residing in a proprietary format, typically a test generation program provided by a textbook publisher.

Before test items can be imported into MT Pro, they first must be converted into Rich Text Format (RTF) RTF is a standard formalized by Microsoft Corporation for specifying how documents and graphics are formatted. RTF files are actually ASCII files with special commands to indicate formatting information, such as fonts, bold, italic, underline and margins.

Every Word processing program and all popular test generation programs have the capability to easily output test question in RTF. For example, in Microsoft’s Word program, to save a document in RTF, you invoke the “Save As… command from the File menu and then click on RTF (.rtf) in the dialog.

Test generation programs typically have an export feature that allows saving as an RTF file. You may have to check the documentation to use that program’s RTF export feature.

Import Procedure

Once you have your test questions saved in RTF, open MicroTest Pro, open an existing question bank or create a new empty question bank and choose “Import RTF File…” from the File Menu. This is what you will see as you do this:

After choosing “Import RTF File…” an open file dialog named “Select a File to Import” appears. Notice that only files with an RTF suffix are available to select for import. Select the desired file and click the Open button.

The selected file will open and MicroTest Pro’s Import Wizard will analyze its contents. When the Import Wizard has completed the analysis, the Import Status dialog will be displayed.

MicroTest Pro provides a high level of control over the way an import file is processed. The Import Status dialog summarizes how the Import Wizard has “parsed” the import file’s contents. The sample dialog shown here indicates the number of chapters, questions and the types of questions found.

  • Clicking the Import button will process the questions MicroTest has found.

  • To review or modify any of the internal setting MicroTest has selected for this file click the Change Settings button.

  • The Cancel button stops the import process without modifying the open question bank.

  • If any errors were detected (missing answers, missing chapters, duplicate question numbers etc.) the Error Report button will become active. Clicking this button displays a report detailing the problems identified while analyzing the file. The report can be printed if desired.

In most cases, it will be possible to resolve any problems by adjusting the settings MicroTest Pro selected for the file. If errors remain after adjusting settings the input file will need to be edited to resolve the problems.
